SPOKANE, Wash.-The Gonzaga baseball team wrapped up its West Coast Conference series against San Francisco Sunday, falling 7-2 at Patterson Baseball Complex & Washington Trust Field in Spokane.
San Francisco used a big second inning to take early control of the game. The Dons scored four runs in the frame on four hits, a walk, a hit by pitch, and a GU throwing error. Four straight Don batters posted an RBI, all coming after Mac Lardner entered the game in place of GU starter Daniel Bies. Bies still was responsible for three of those runs, and Lardner took on one.
In the top of the fourth, San Francisco added two more with a two-run double from Dominic Miroglio, but the Zags got those two back from the bat of Tyler Frost. With one out, Frost launched a 1-0 pitch from Dons starter Benji Post over the fence in right field for a two-run home run. He brought home Daniel Fredrickson, who had reached base with a single the play before.
Freshman righty Casey Legumina entered the game to begin the fifth inning, replacing Lardner. The Chandler, Ariz., native accounted for all three outs in the frame himself, striking out three and allowing just a single up the middle. He also pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings before allowing a solo home run in the eighth to Allen Smoot.
Legumina's solid pitching kept the Zags within striking distance. The offense saw a chance in the seventh to change the game with a bases-loaded opportunity. Justin Jacobs singled and Jake Vieth drew a walk off Post, and the USF starter was chased one batter later when Jake Roberts hit into a fielder's choice at second. Pinch hitter Nick Brooks then walked to load the bases with two outs, but pinch hitter Jeff Bohling struck out swinging to end the threat.
Gonzaga then went down in order in both the eighth and the ninth innings, ending the game at 7-2 in favor of the visitors.
Post picked up the win after pitching 6.2 innings of two-run ball. Brendan Jenkins, who struck Bohling out in the seventh, earned the save, his first of the year, and Bies drew the loss after allowing three runs, two of which were earned.
Bulldog Bites:
- Frost's blast in the fourth inning was his sixth of the season. He entered the weekend tied for third in the conference with five home runs. The junior is now just one four-bagger shy of tying his career-best of seven from last season.
- In all, Legumina pitched 4.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out three batters. In his last three appearances (since March 18 versus Pacific) he's scattered 10 hits over 11.0 innings, allowing just two runs while striking out nine batters. The freshman has issued just one free pass during that stretch.
- The loss is Gonzaga's first in conference play this season after sweeping Pacific last weekend and winning both games of a doubleheader against the Dons March 25. Despite the loss, the Zags won the series against USF for their fourth consecutive WCC series win, dating back to last season. They've started WCC play 5-1 three times since 2011.
Next Up:
The Bulldogs (13-11, 5-1 WCC) will return to the road for a four-game series next weekend. They'll begin the trip in Malibu, Calif., with a three-game WCC series at Pepperdine March 31-April 2. Gonzaga also makes a stop in Santa Barbara for a single contest at UC Santa Barbara on Monday, April 3.
