Singles Play Shines on Day One of Aggie Invitational

DAVIS, Calif.--Singles play was a bright spot for Gonzaga men's tennis Friday as five Bulldogs advanced in their respective singles brackets at the Aggie Invitational.
"It was a good day overall," said Gonzaga head coach Peter MacDonald. "We didn't perform the way we wanted to in doubles, but the guys rebounded and did well in singles. They made returns and competed well!"
All three Bulldogs in the A Singles bracket picked up wins. Junior Ruadhan O'Sullivan, seeded fifth in the tournament's top flight, breezed into the Round of 16 with a 6-3, 6-3 win, and sophomore Vincent Rettke also won in two sets. Fellow sophomore Sam Feit battled back from a loss in his first frame to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 over host school UC Davis' Jonathan Star.
In the B Singles bracket, freshman Matthew Perkins dominated in his collegiate debut, dispatching Dylan Levitt of Nevada 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Bryan Husin also won his first match as a Zag with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 comeback victory over USF's Marco Barretto.
In doubles play, all four GU duos lost their main bracket openers, but the teams of O'Sullivan/Feit and Husin/Emilio Moreno rebounded with consolation victories in the B flight. They'll play for a spot in the consolation final Saturday, Sept. 30 at 8:30 a.m. All matches will once again take place at the Marya Welch Tennis Center in Davis.
