Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Gonzaga's men's soccer team went down 3-1 at Santa Clara on Friday evening in West Coast Conference action in Santa Clara, Calif.
After a scoreless first 40 minutes, it was the Broncos that got on the board first with the help of the defense. A GU own goal put SCU up 1-0 in the 41
st minute, and then the Broncos added one by Miles Robinson less than a minute before halftime for a 2-0 lead.
Santa Clara then got on the board one more time before GU was able to get a goal of their own. SCU's Robinson got his second goal in the 50
th minute, but Gonzaga's
Austin Giftopoulos put home his second of the year to pull within 3-1. The Giftopoulos goal came with a header off a free kick from the foot of
Isaiah Jackson.
"The first and last five minutes of each half are crucial and the result tonight is proof," head coach
Paul Meehan said. "We need to be at our best for all 90 min and while we were good a lot of the match, we need a much better response as a team when misfortune comes our way. We will watch the video, regroup and come back as a better team on Sunday."
Gonzaga managed 10 shots in the game, including four on goal. Demetrius Kigeya and
Jake Kempf each had a pair of shots, with both of Kempf's on goal.
Ben Willis made four saves in net for Gonzaga.
