Zags Draw with No. 25 Pepperdine

Women’s soccer gets first point versus Waves since 2014

SPOKANE, Wash. – In front of a lively crowd at Luger Field, the Gonzaga women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against No. 25 Pepperdine Friday.

The Zags (8-4-4, 3-2-2 West Coast Conference) got their first point against Pepperdine since 2014, after being outscored 13-0 in the last three matchups. It's only the 10th time GU played a ranked team to a draw or a win in 77 attempts.

Gonzaga outshot the Waves, 18-17, but both teams placed five shots on goal. The game, which was televised on ESPNU, was an entertaining end-to-end contest.

Seventeen minutes into the match, Pepperdine's (9-6-2, 4-1-2 WCC) Hailey Stenberg struck the crossbar on a shot from just outside of the box. Ten minutes later, the Bulldogs' Madeline Gotta hit the crossbar on the other end. Jodi Ulkekul's header in the 53rd minute was saved at the line by a Pepperdine defender. In the 86th minute, Ulkekul had another opportunity taken away by a tremendous save by the Waves' Brielle Preece.

Isabel Jones made a pair of impressive saves for the Zags in the first overtime. The sophomore ended the match with five saves, while Preece had four. Madeline Gotta took a game-high six shots for GU, while Joelle Anderson led the Waves with five.

Pepperdine is unbeaten in its last five matches, and the Bulldogs are unbeaten in eight of their last 10.
