MBB Meets Arizona in the Maui Invitational Semifinals

The Zags and Wildcats meet for the ninth time

THE TIP-OFF:
- Gonzaga faces Arizona in the semifinals of the 2018 Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Tuesday, at 7:30 p.m. Pacific, in Lahaina, Hawaii.
- Arizona owns a 6-2 lead in the all-time series, but Gonzaga won the most recent meeting, topping the Wildcats, 69-62, in the HoopHall LA event in Los Angeles on Dec. 3, 2016. Josh Perkins played all 40 minutes and scored 16 points with three three-pointers.
- The Zags are 34-18 against Pac-12 competition under Mark Few. GU has won its last four meetings against Pac-12 foes.
- Gonzaga's last matchup with a Pac-12 opponent was a 97-70 road victory at Washington last season on Dec. 10.
- The Zags held off Illinois 84-78 in the Maui Invitational quarterfinals. Rui Hachimura led GU with 23 points.
- The Bulldogs have now started 4-0 in nine on the last 10 seasons.
 
SERIES NOTES:
- This is the ninth all-time meeting between Gonzaga and Arizona. This will be the sixth meeting on neutral court between the programs.
- Gonzaga won the most recent meeting, topping Arizona 69-62 in the HoopHall LA event in Los Angeles on Dec. 3, 2016. Josh Perkins scored 16 points, making three three-pointers, playing all 40 minutes of the game.
- The two teams have a home-and-home series planned for 2019 and 2020. Gonzaga will visit Arizona next season and the Wildcats return the trip the following year.
- The last three matchups between the two schools have all been decided by single digits.
- Arizona won the first-ever meeting, 101-87, in Tucson on Nov. 29, 2000.
 
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS:
- The Wildcats are off to a 4-0 start on the season, following a 71-66 win over Iowa State in the quarterfinals.
- Five UA players reached double-digit scoring led by Justin Coleman's 18 points. Chase Jeter had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Brandon Williams had 14 points and six assists.
- Arizona started the season defeating all three of its opponents by at least 20 points.
- Brandon Randolph is leading UA with 16.8 points per game. Brandon Williams is adding 14.3 points per outing, while Jeter is chipping in 13.0.
- Jeter leads the Wildcats off the glass, with 9.3 rebounds per game.
- The Wildcats were picked to finish fourth overall in the Pac-12 after winning the conference a year ago.
 
A ZAG WIN WOULD ...
- Advance the Zags to the Maui Invitational Championships.
- Extend Gonzaga's win streak to four games.
- Be the 19th straight over an unranked opponent.
- Improve the Bulldogs' record to 35-18 against Pac-12 opponents under Mark Few.
- Make Gonzaga 94-16 in November games under Mark Few.
- Improve Josh Perkins' record to 105-15 in games he has played in for Gonzaga.
 
JONES'ING IN MAUI:
- Gonzaga's Jeremy Jones recorded his first collegiate double-double in the Maui Invitational quarterfinal win over Illinois.
- It was his 85th collegiate appearance, 64th at Gonzaga.
- Jones' 14 points were a new career-high, and he reached a double-digit rebound total for the first time in collegiate career with 11.
- The redshirt senior recorded the double-double in a season-high 17 minutes.
 
SPREADING THE LOVE:
- The Zags have had at least three double-digit scorers in 75 of the last 80 games.
- Eight GU players have scored double-digits in a game already this season.
- Five Bulldogs are averaging double-digit scoring and a sixth is averaging nine points a game.
