Women’s Soccer Ends Stellar Season with 1-0 Win

Zags finish year with 10th victory in a shutout over Portland

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's soccer team finished a 10-win season with a 1-0 shutout victory over Portland on Saturday.

On a cold and rainy night at Luger Field, the Zags (10-4-4, 5-2-2 West Coast Conference) capped off a fantastic season with their first-ever win over Portland. GU finished the season fourth in the conference standings, its highest finish since ending third at 3-1-3 in league play in 2005. The Bulldogs were picked eighth in the WCC Preseason Poll. Gonzaga ended the season going unbeaten in 10 of its last 12 games (7-2-3).

Gonzaga's India Jencks scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute. Her sixth goal of the season came off of Jodi Ulkekul's eighth career assist. In her first start for the Zags, Drew Williams posted a shutout in the net. The redshirt senior made three saves.

The Zags outshot Portland, 9-2, in the first half, and 15-9 in the game. GU placed five shots on goal, while the Pilots (11-9-0, 4-5-0 WCC) had three. Jencks' goal was the 15th in her career, which ranks seventh in GU history. Her 35 career points are ninth in program history.

Gonzaga's defense ended the season with seven shutouts and allowed only 18 goals, which ranked second in the West Coast Conference.

In only his second season, Chris Watkins became the fastest head coach to reach 20 wins in a career in program history. Next season, Watkins will welcome back several experienced players including Jencks, Sophia Viviano (5th in GU history with 11 career assists and 10th with 33 career points), Samantha Heilman (matched program record with seven assists this season), Isabel Jones (five shutouts this season ranks seventh in program history) and some key pieces from the defense.
