Baseball's Machtolf Inducted into G-Prep HOF

Feb. 2, 2018 SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga baseball head coach Mark Machtolf was one of six individuals inducted into the Gonzaga Preparatory School Hall of Fame earlier this week.

Machtolf was joined in the 2018 induction class by former Gonzaga baseball star Mike Redmond, Jack Stockton, John Luger, Frank "Ginge" Etter and Maj. Anne McClain.

Machtolf, who enters his 15th season as the baseball head coach at GU, was a three-sport star at Gonzaga Prep before attending Stanford University, where he played both football and baseball, ultimately choosing baseball after two years playing both sports.

At G-Prep, Machtolf earned all-league honors three times and earned MVP honors in the all-city baseball series on the diamond, was named all-state, all-conference three times and the offensive lineman of the year in the league in football, and was all-conference three times and the league's all-time leading rebounder in basketball when he graduated.

Redmond, who was inducted into the West Coast Conference Hall of Honor in 2016, played baseball at Gonzaga after his time at Gonzaga Prep, starring for the Bulldogs during the early `90s.

Luger and Etter have also had an impact on GU beyond their time at Gonzaga Prep as benefactors. Etter is one of the founders of Garco Construction, the company who built the McCarthey Athletic Center, Stevens Center, Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field and the new Volkar Center. Luger is currently a Trustee Emeritus at Gonzaga and served as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 2010-12. His name also adorns Luger Field, the home of the GU men's and women's soccer teams, in honor of his contributions to the soccer facilities.

Stockton, the late father of GU basketball star and Naismith Hall of Famer John Stockton and son of GU Hall of Famer Houston Stockton, also attended GU in the early `50s.
