IRVINE, Calif. -- Gonzaga's baseball team fell to UC Irvine in the second game of a three-game set on Saturday, 6-1, in Irvine, Calif.
The Anteaters (5-1) got on the board early with three in the first, and GU (2-4) wasn't able to break through until a run in the ninth.
"It was not our best effort today in all three facets of the game, we didn't play very well," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We have a big opportunity tomorrow to come out and salvage a win in the series."
Gonzaga starter Mac Lardner put together a solid outing, going six innings and giving up four earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Keaton Kneuppel pitched a scoreless seventh in relief.
Austin Pinorini collected his first-career triple as a Zag in the top of the first inning, but was stranded on third. GU threatened again in the eighth inning after Carson Breshears singled and reached second on a wild pitch, but the rally was halted without a run.
The Zags got their lone run in the ninth. Nick Nyquist collected his first hit of the season with a pinch-hit double and came home on a one-out single from Jake Vieth.
The Zags will wrap up the series at UC Irvine on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available on the baseball schedule page at GoZags.com.
