IRVINE, Calif. - The Gonzaga men's tennis battled UC Irvine to four three-setters in singles play, but dropped the match 6-1 on road on Thursday in Irvine, Calif.
The match was much closer than the 6-1 score suggested, as the Zags won a doubles match and pushed the Anteaters to three sets in four of the six singles matches. GU won just one of those three-setters.
In doubles, the No. 1 duo of Vincent Rettke and Kyle Everly dominated their match 6-1, but the Anteaters took a 6-1 win on No. 2 and clinched the point with a 6-4 win on No. 3.
In singles, Ruadhan O'Sullivan grabbed the lone victory with his win on No. 1 in come-from-behind fashion, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Both Vincent Rettke on No. 2 and Simon Homedes Dualde on No. 5 won their opening sets, but weren't able to hold on in their matches. Matthew Perkins also won a set, tying his match at one set each before falling.
The Zags will wrap up their four-match trip to California with Yale on Saturday in a neutral site match in Irvine, Calif.
