SAN DIEGO - The Gonzaga Bulldogs competed in three petite finals and one final-only event on Sunday in the San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay.

In the Collegiate Varsity Jessop-Whittier Cup Invitational, the Zags' top squad took runner-up, just three seconds behind Stanford at 7:08.246, beating boats from Tennessee, Oklahoma, UC Santa Barbara, and West Coast Conference-foe San Diego. It equaled an eighth place overall finish for GU in the event.

The second varsity eight finished runner-up as well in the 2V Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy at 7:18.831, two seconds behind Victoria but ahead of Tennessee, Sacramento State, Kansas State, and San Diego State. The Zags finished eighth overall as well.

The varsity four boat took third in the Varsity 4+ Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup at 8:11.340. They were just two seconds behind Kansas State and defeated San Diego State, SMU, and Sacramento State. They finished ninth overall. The second varsity four raced in a final-only event on Sunday, taking fifth at 8:19.786 ahead of Kansas State.

"It was another day of quality racing," Gonzaga head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "All of our boats had some hard-fought finishes. We are seeing some good improvement. We will see some of these crews again and we need to continue improving if we want better results later in the season."

GU will try and do just that as they face Oregon State in a dual next Saturday on Dexter Lake in Eugene, Ore.
