MORAGA, Calif. - Gonzaga baseball got a combined shutout from starter
Alek Jacob and closer
Casey Legumina along with just enough offense to take a 3-0 win in Game 2 of the series at Saint Mary's on Friday afternoon.
The teams were scoreless through the sixth, but a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double by freshman leadoff hitter Ernie Yake broke the game open. From there, Jacob continued to dominate in his start and Legumina came on with two outs in the eighth to shut the door.
"That was a huge team response today," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "Alek [Jacob] gave us an outstanding effort on the mound, and Ernie [Yake] was able to get the big hit for us. We are excited for the opportunity in front of us tomorrow."
Jacob went 7.2 innings allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out five and walking three. Legumina pitched the last 1.1 innings allowing just one hit and striking out one to get his sixth save of the season.
Yake was the lone Zag with two hits, leading off the game with a single in addition to his 3-RBI double. Gunnar Schubert saw his 17-game hit streak snapped, but did reach base on an error to push his on-base streak to 24 games.
The Zags threatened in the fifth inning with a pair of hits from Fredrickson and Breshears, but Fredrickson was caught trying to steal third and Yake grounded out to end the inning.
GU's seventh, in which they got three runs on Yake's double, came via two walks and a hit-by-pitch which loaded the bases.
GU will wrap the series at Saint Mary's in Game 3 on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Live coverage links are available on the baseball schedule page at GoZags.com.
