One day after beating San Francisco, the Zags came out and grabbed another WCC victory despite dropping the doubles point. GU battled back in singles to win four matches and move their season record to 9-6 overall and 2-3 in the league.
"We responded really well after losing that doubles point, that can be really disappointing but each guy came out ready to win in singles," head coach Peter MacDonald said. "I'm really proud of everyone, and I think we showed we have good depth. It was great to see Kyle [Everly] clinch that, he came through big for us."
In doubles, the point came down to a tiebreak on Court 2 after each team had one match to their credit. The Zags won on No. 3, with Ruadhan O'Sullivan and Emilio Moreno dominating in a 6-1 win. After Santa Clara took the match on No. 1, 6-1, GU's Vincent Rettke and Kyle Everly forced a tiebreak on Court 2. The Zag pair fell 7-6 (1) in the tiebreak as the Broncos took the point.
In singles, Santa Clara built the lead to 2-0 with a win on No. 4, but Rettke got the Zags on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win on No. 3 and Feit added a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory on No. 2 to tie the score at 2-2. The three remaining courts went to three sets to decide the match.
The momentum stayed on GU's side as the Zags were able to pull out the victory with wins on Nos. 5 and 6. On Court 5, Moreno battled back after dropping the second set to win 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. And then Everly clinched it with a 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-2 win on No. 6.
GU will be back on the in West Coast Conference action at No. 48 Loyola Marymount on Saturday, April 7 in Los Angeles, Calif.
