SPOKANE, Wash. - Freshman starter Alek Jacob went the distance on the mound for Gonzaga baseball, but the Zags weren't able to find their offense in a 1-0 loss at San Francisco on Saturday afternoon.

"That was a great pitching duel between two of the better young arms in our conference," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "They got the big hit, that was the difference today. We have a great opportunity to come out and compete for a series win tomorrow."

Gonzaga threatened with two outs in the ninth putting runners on first and third after a single by Austin Pinorini, but Nick Brooks grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game with USF taking the force out at second base.

Jacob pitched all 8.0 innings for GU, his third complete game of the season, allowing just one run on five hits with six strikeouts and just one walk.

Offensively, the Zags managed just four hits in the game and put three runners on with walks, but USF starting pitcher Riley Ornido was able to pitch around any trouble. Brooks and Pinorini each had a single in the game, along with singles by Ernie Yake and Daniel Fredrickson.

Gonzaga and San Francisco will decide the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Live coverage will be available on GoZags.com.
