SPOKANE, Wash. -- Gonzaga baseball couldn't find the offense in a 5-2 series-opening loss to Loyola Marymount on Friday night at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust.
GU managed just five hits in the game to 10 for the Lions, while LMU hit three homers and the Zags got a run on a homer and a sac fly.
Gonzaga starter Daniel Bies battled through 5.2 innings of work, allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
The Lions started the scoring with the first two runs of the game, both on solo homers by Niko Pacheco to take a 2-0 lead. The home runs came in the second and the fifth innings, but GU was able to get one back in the bottom of the fifth.
Jake Vieth stepped to the plate and deposited his seventh home run of the year over the fence in the power alley in right-center to bring GU within one at 2-1.
An LMU RBI triple in the sixth put the score at 3-1, but GU gained one back in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Austin Pinorini that score Branson Trube from third.
LMU then added their third solo home run of the day in the top of the ninth.
The Zags and Lions will pick the series back up on Saturday in the second of a three-gamer at 6 p.m. at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. Live coverage will be available on GoZags.com.
