SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Gonzaga baseball took a 4-1 lead into the ninth, but San Diego found its power with the tying and winning runs coming off homers in the series final on Sunday in San Diego, Calif.
GU (24-20, 14-10) posted a four-run seventh inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and headed to the ninth inning where a three-run pinch hit homer by the Toreros tied it. USD (21-27, 10-14) then added a solo shot in the bottom of the 11th to take the win.
"We gave ourselves every chance to sweep this weekend and just couldn't finish today," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We needed a big series win on the road and we accomplished that. We are proud of our effort this weekend and now get to head home to finish up finals and our last two homestands."
Lefty starter Mac Lardner pitched well for the Zags, going 6.0 innings and allowing just one run on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
On offense, Isaac Barrera and Ernie Yake had two hits, an RBI and a run scored each, while Gunnar Schubert had two RBI, a hit and reached two more times on walks.
The starting pitchers traded zeroes in the scoring column through the first 5.5 innings before USD got on the board with a solo homer off Lardner in the sixth. But, the Zags answered right back in the top of the seventh with a big inning.
Barrera and Yake hit back-to-back RBI singles to grab the lead 2-1, and then Schubert knocked home a pair with a single through the left side. GU had five hits in the inning on the way to a 4-1 lead.
After the GU bullpen worked through jams in the seventh and eighth, the Toreros got to Legumina in the ninth with a pinch-hit three-run homer to force extra innings.
Gonzaga will play its final non-conference games of the season next weekend at home against New Mexico State in a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. Live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
