Sophie Whittle,
Graciela Rosas and
Katie Day all earned titles this weekend on the 2018 Oracle ITA Summer Circuit. Both Whittle and Rosas competed at the ITA sanctioned event at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, Calif. while Day participated in an ITA event hosted by Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Ore.
Rising senior Whittle took home both the singles and doubles titles on Monday. Whittle won the Women's Singles Flight A and paired with Rosas to win the Women's Doubles title.
Whittle dropped just one set in five matches on her way to the individual title. The Nipomo, Calif. native opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Natalie Shamma in the round of 32 and followed it up with a 7-6(5), 6-4 battle over Danielle Wilson in the round of 16. Whittle made quick work of her opponents in both the quarterfinals and semis, beginning with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Julia Ronney followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win over Taylor Bridges to advance to the finals.
In the finals, Whittle faced Stanford's Emma Higuchi, opening with the 6-2 first set win. Higuchi responded in the second set with a 7-5 victory to force a tiebreaker, but Whittle came out on top 10-8 to claim the individual title.
In doubles play, Whittle and Rosas opened with an 8-0 rout over Audrey Stewart and Megan Tagaloa in the round of 16 followed by an 8-4 win over Julia Ronney and Emily Dush in the quarterfinals. The duo advanced to the finals with a tight 8-6 victory over Julia Lilien and Jessica Anzo in the semifinals and took home the title with an 8-6 win over Kelani Soli and Rebekah Anderson in the finals.
Day, who was the No. 2 seed in the Lewis & Clark College tournament, earned a bye in the quarterfinal round on Sunday to advance to the semifinals. She made quick work of her semifinal match, defeating Sidney Lowry 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the finals. Day defeated Cassidy Binder in a third-set tiebreaker to earn the individual title, 6-1, 2-6, 10-8.
