SPOKANE, Wash. – In front of a raucous student-led crowd at Luger Field on Monday night, the Gonzaga Bulldogs battled Cal Poly to a 0-0 tie in double overtime.
"What an incredible atmosphere here tonight," Gonzaga head coach Paul Meehan said. "We battled all night, playing great defense, and we created a lot of good chances as well."
The Zags have recorded two ties in their first two outings in 2018 and on Monday night, Ben Willis was outstanding in goal again with eight saves for the Bulldogs. GU trailed by five shots at halftime, but finished just one back at 13-14. Mark McEntosh, Quinn Liebmann, Denis Kalamar, and Joe Corner all fired two each. The Zags put six on frame all together.
GU's best chance in regulation came early in the second half in the 53rd minute as Frankie Ljucovic had a straight shot that was saved by the keeper. In the 97th minute, Demitrius Kigeya went around three defenders in the box but his shot was saved by the Cal Poly keeper. Late in the match, in the 108th minute, Matt Kintzle got a one-on-one opportunity on the opposing keeper, but his shot, and the rebound from Corner, were both deflected by the CP keeper to secure the draw.
The Zags stay on the home stand for another four matches, hosting California Baptist on Friday at 7 pm at Luger Field. Live links are available at GoZags.com.
