Gonzaga Falls in West Coast Conference Opener

Braun scores first collegiate goal at BYU

PROVO, Utah – The Gonzaga women's soccer team dropped their West Coast Conference season-opener at BYU Thursday, 3-1.
 
The Cougars (6-3-1, 1-0-0 WCC) snapped Gonzaga's 283-minute shutout streak with a trio of goals. BYU outshot the Zags, 31-14, but GU had a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Cougars had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
 
BYU's Elise Flake opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a strike to the near post. It was Flake's sixth goal of the season. Bella Folino was credited with the assist. Lizzy Braby scored her second goal of the season with a chip over the keeper in the 21st minute.
 
In the 55th minute, the Bulldogs' (5-3-2, 0-1-0) Sophia Braun had her penalty kick blocked, but she kicked in the rebound. It was the freshman's first collegiate goal.
 
The Cougars' Makaylie Moore scored her second goal of the season in the 72nd minute. Moore brought in a pass from Mikayla Colohan and lofted a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced in the net.
 
BYU's Sabrina Davis made eight saves, while Isabel Jones made three in the GU net. Colohan took a game-high seven shots. Four of Sophia Viviano's five shots were on goal for the Zags.
