PROVO, Utah – The Gonzaga volleyball team fell in three sets (25-12, 25-10, 25-15) at No. 1 BYU Thursday evening at the Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah.
Gonzaga (4-10, 1-2 WCC) was led by
Sarah Penner with 10 kills off 26 swings with two errors to hit at a .308 clip.
Faith Smith added 18 assists and nine digs.
BYU (14-0, 4-0 WCC) never trailed in the first and second sets, collecting the 25-12 and 25-10 wins for a 2-0 match lead. The Bulldogs struggled to gain traction, hitting a combined -.051 while the Cougars collected 7.0 team blocks in the first two sets.
Gonzaga bounced back to start the third, connecting for 11 kills hitting .229. The Bulldogs held the early lead (3-2) behind two kills from
Jenna Kuehn, but a balanced BYU offense shifted the momentum in favor of the Cougars. Eight players registered a kill for BYU, and the Cougars' .361 hitting clip allowed them to pull away for the 25-15 third set win and the 3-0 sweep.
BYU was led by Roni Jones-Perry with 10 kills hitting .381 while Lyndie Haddock-Eppich added a match-high 31 assists.
Gonzaga continues its road swing with a 12 p.m. match Saturday, Sept. 29 at San Diego.
