PORTLAND, Ore. – The Gonzaga volleyball team picked up its first win of the season in style, defeating California in five sets (26-24, 25-21, 20-25, 23-25, 15-11) in its first match of the Les Schwab West Coast Challenge. The win marks the Bulldogs' second win over a Pac-12 opponent in as many seasons.
It was a combined team effort for the Zags as three players finished with double-figure kills and four players added double-figure digs, but senior outside hitter
Perry Ramsey was clutch for the Bulldogs. Perry finished with a career-high 20 kills hitting .298 to go along with 11 digs for her first double-double of the season.
"Perry was the difference-maker for us," Gonzaga head volleyball coach
Diane Nelson said. "She came alive and got stubborn, but everyone contributed in huge ways."
In the first two sets, Gonzaga (1-5) was solid offensively, connecting for 30 kills off 74 swings with seven errors to hit .311. The Bulldogs built a sizeable five-point lead (20-15) late in the first set, thanks in part to eight first-set kills from Perry, but a furious comeback from the Golden Bears tied the set 24-all. The Zags rallied and posted back-to-back kills from
Sarah Penner and
Kennedy Croft to seal the 26-24 first set win.
The Zags rolled in the second set, hitting .360 while capitalizing on the Golden Bears errors. California (5-2) suffered five hitting errors in addition to six service errors, and the Bulldogs were able to build as much as a six-point lead in the second set. The Zags finished the set with a kill from Ramsey to claim the 25-21 set win and a 2-0 match lead.
The momentum shifted in favor of the Golden Bears in the third and fourth sets as they combined to hit .357. The Bulldogs struggled to terminate at the same level, and Cal claimed the third set 25-20 and the fourth 25-23.
California took the early 4-2 lead in the fifth set, but three Bulldog kills and an attacking error from the Golden Bears put the Zags in front 7-4. Cal continued to struggle offensively, committing six errors in the final frame. With the set tied 8-8, two straight Cal hitting errors gave the Zags a 10-8 advantage. The Bulldogs finished it off, outscoring the Golden Bears 5-3 to take the 15-11 set win and the 3-2 match win.
Gonzaga was led by Perry's 20 kills and 11 digs while
Jenna Kuehn added a career-high 52 assists and 12 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Tiyana Hallums led the Zags with 19 digs, while both
Peighton De Von and
Katelyn Oppio finished with 10 kills apiece.
California was led by Bailee Huizenga with 18 kills hitting .421 while Jade Blevins added 34 assists.
The Zags are back in action Friday evening at 5 p.m. against Fresno State.
