Zags Rally for Draw with San Francisco

Gonzaga remains unbeaten in conference play

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's soccer team climbed back from a two-goal second half deficit, to draw with San Francisco, 3-3, at Luger Field Saturday.
 
With the result, the Zags (9-3-1, 2-0-1 West Coast Conference) remain unbeaten in league play. GU is currently fifth in the United Soccer Coaches' West Region poll, and San Francisco is sixth.
 
Gonzaga outshot USF, 17-15, in the match. The Bulldogs were outshot 6-5 in the first half, but had a 12-9 advantage following the break. The Zags placed 10 shots on frame, while San Francisco had eight.
 
Just three minutes into the game, the Bulldogs' Samantha Heilman scored her fourth goal of the season on a chip over the keeper. Madeline Gotta was credited with her third assist of the season. She moved into a tie for ninth on the GU all-time list with 10 career assists.
 
San Francisco (8-4-2, 1-1-1 WCC) scored the equalizer in the 15th minute. Samantha Jehnings found the back of the net for the sixth time this season, off of the first of three assists in the match from Miciah Madison. Keely Roy was on the receiving end of a pass from Madison for a goal in the 19th minute. USF's Ashley Humphrey scored her fourth goal of the season in the 47th minute to give the Dons a 3-1 lead. It was Madison's ninth assist of the season.
 
Gotta scored her fifth goal of the season in the 59th minute. The senior moved to 4-for-4 this season on penalty kicks. She now has 32 points with 11 goals in her career.
 
In the 86th minute, Lauren Elwer scored the tying goal on a header off of a corner kick from India Jencks. It was the sixth goal of Elwer's freshman season. Jencks' seventh assist of the year matched the program's single season record. She moved into a tie for fourth in program history with 48 career points.
 
Olivia Camera made seven saves in USF net, while Lyza Bosselmann had five for the Bulldogs.
 
Gonzaga travels to Pepperdine, which ranks third in the region, on Oct. 19. The Waves (5-5-2, 1-1-0) face Loyola Marymount Sunday. Next Saturday's game in Malibu is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start
