SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's rowing team officially opens the 2019-20 season with the Head of the Spokane Saturday on the Spokane River.

Gonzaga welcomes Washington State for the Head of the Spokane; the programs will race two 5,000-meter flights, with the first flight beginning at 9 a.m. GU will race three boats on Saturday in the varsity eight, JV8 and 3V8.
"This is a great group of athletes, and they are focused on racing this weekend," Gehn said. "We are looking forward to our opener with Washington State at the Head of the Spokane."
Thirteen return from last season's top two boats, including five from GU's varsity eight lineup. Seven novice rowers will make their debuts for the Bulldogs at the Head of the Spokane. The 5,000-meter race will finish at the Gonzaga boathouse on the Spokane River.
Last season at the Head of the Spokane, the Zags Varsity 8 and JV8 swept the Cougars, finishing in 15:40 and 16:49, respectively. WSU's varsity four boat claimed a six-second victory over the Zags', while GU's third varsity eight boats finished in first and third.
