LOS ANGELES – The Gonzaga women's soccer team picked up their 10th victory of the season with a 3-0 win at Loyola Marymount Wednesday.
The Zags (10-4-1, 3-1-1 West Coast Conference) secured their third-straight 10-win season. It's the seventh double-digit win season in program history. GU had four consecutive double-digit win seasons from 2003 to 2006. Wednesday's win was also the 30th for Chris Watkins as head coach at Gonzaga.
The Bulldogs' Samantha Heilman opened the scoring in the 24th minute. Her fifth goal of the season came off of a header on a cross by Taylor Kernion. It was Kernion's third assist of the season, and seventh of her career.
In the 67th minute, Maddie Cooley stole the ball from the LMU defense and slid a pass to Madeline Gotta, which led to Gotta's team-high sixth goal of the season. Gotta moved closer to the program's all-time Top-10, with her 12th career goal. It was Cooley's third career assist, but first points this season.
Maggie Conners found the back of the net for the third time this season in the 77th minute. Gabriela Maas dribbled up the left side of the field, before playing a ball back to Conners, who struck it into the net.
Gonzaga outshot Loyola Marymount, 15-11. The Zags placed nine shots on frame, compared to three for LMU. GU had a 10-3 advantage in shots in the first half. The Lions had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Bulldogs forced Sadie Kenny into six saves in the LMU (3-10-2, 2-3-0 WCC) net. Lyza Bosselmann shared time in the Gonzaga net, and made two saves.
The Bulldogs return home to host Santa Clara Saturday at 7 p.m. The Broncos (8-5-2, 2-0-2) are receiving votes in the latest national rankings.
