Men’s Soccer Earns Big Upset Over No. 18 San Diego

Second-half goals from O’Malley, Kigeya is the difference

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Gonzaga men's soccer pulled a major upset over No. 18 San Diego, 2-1, on Saturday night on the road in San Diego, Calif.

Gonzaga (3-8-1, 2-1-0) came out firing in the second half against the Toreros (10-3-1, 1-2-0), taking the lead early in the half and then answered USD's tying goal with the game-winner only 90 seconds later when Demitrius Kigeya regained possession from the keeper in close to score.

The victory marked the first win over a ranked opponent in the last three seasons for Gonzaga. After starting the season winless in its first six matches, the Zags are 3-2-1 in the last six including a pair of WCC victories. GU's two league wins are the most since the team won two in 2016 with four more remaining this season.

San Diego had the shot edge 13-10 overall, but GU was the aggressor in the second half, outshooting the Toreros 8-4 in the last 45 minutes.

In the first half, GU was stout defensively, especially in pressure situations. The Zags turned away nine USD shots, including three saved by goalkeeper Johan Garibay, to head into the intermission scoreless.

Early in the second half, Gonzaga put the pressure on the Toreros with a goal from Theo O'Malley on a shot from 15 yards out. It was the junior's third of the season and was assisted by freshman Cole Rovegno to give the Zags a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute.

San Diego answered in the 66th minute with a goal, but the answer came quickly with Kigeya getting his second goal of the year.

Gonzaga will be back in action on Wednesday on the road at Portland at 7 p.m. Check GoZags.com for links to live coverage.
