GU doubles pair to face No. 2 seed Oregon Monday
STANFORD, Calif. — Gonzaga doubles partners Sam Feit and Matthew Hollingworth continued their great play at the ITA Northwest Regionals, advancing to the semifinals of the main draw on Sunday in Stanford, Calif.
"It was a very encouraging day for our program," head coach Jonas Piibor said. "To go 9-3 on Day 3 of our tough region is showing me something. Sam [Feit] and Matthew [Hollingworth] are continuing to get better and are very excited to get another opportunity in the semifinal tomorrow. Sam had a solid run in singles beating Cal in the Round of 16 before falling to the No. 3-seed from Stanford."
Feit and Hollingworth faced off against ninth-seeded Santa Clara in the quarterfinals and came out victorious, 8-6. They'll take on the No. 2 seed from Oregon on Monday at 10 a.m.
In singles, Feit's tournament came to an end in the quarterfinals after earning a win in the Round of 16. The GU senior beat Cal's Dominic Barretto 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, but fell to the No. 3 seed, Stanford's Sangeet Sridhar, 7-6(5), 6-3.
GU won a number of consolation matches on the day in both singles and doubles. On the singles side, freshman Eric Hadigian defeated Santa Clara's Jesus Tapiador Barajas 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(5), and senior Vincent Rettke beat Pacific's Tadiwa Chinamo in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Senior Kyle Everly won a three-set match over Sac State's Hermont Legaspi, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(5), and junior Hunter Egger beat Santa Clara's Nick Cmager 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Brandon Park also earned a straight-set win, beating Sac State's Carlos Rodriguez 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles consolation play, GU's Egger and Oliver Andersson beat Portland 8-5, while Park and Rettke teamed up to beat Pacific 8-5.
