Lily Scanlon
Melbourne, Victoria (Australia) | Lake Ginnindera Senior Secondary College | 5-9 | Guard
Scanlon will be the second Australian to join the Zags' ranks in as many seasons, and the 5-foot-9 guard brings a wealth of international playing experience. Most recently, Scanlon led the U19 Australian National team to a Silver medal at the FIBA World Championships in Thailand in 2019 where she averaged 5.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Scanlon scored 12 points in the opening game of the Group Phase against Team USA.
Scanlon was also part of the U17 Australian team that claimed Bronze at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup in 2018; she averaged 11.7 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.9 assists during the course of the tournament. She scored in double-figures four times with a tournament-high 22 points coming against Canada.
The Australian native also played for the Victoria Metro State team, averaging 13.5 points, 3.78 rebounds, 5.89 assists and 2.22 steals per contest. She was the team representative for the U16, U18 and U20s, and she captained the U18's to a gold medal at the Australian National Championships in 2018. That same year, Scanlon was also named the Australian Junior Championships tournament assist leader.
"I chose Gonzaga because as soon as I visited campus, I felt welcomed and a part of a family," Scanlon said. "That is very important to me considering I will be so far away from my home in Australia. I also loved the idea of being challenged and improving on and off the court in a competitive environment."
Scanlon has been a scholarship holder at the Australian Institute of Sport since 2018.
"Lily is as fierce a competitor on the court as she is light hearted and kind off the court," Fortier said. "She is so strong and heady, which are things we really value in our guards. We think her international experience, and the level which she plays in Australia, will allow her to make an easy adjustment to the college game. She is a well-rounded guard, and with her ball skills and passing ability, coupled with the way she can shoot it, she will be able to play any of the guard positions for us. Welcome to the family Lily!"
