SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga men's soccer got a second half goal to tie the game on the way to a 1-1 draw with visiting Santa Clara on Saturday night in Spokane, Wash.
Gonzaga (3-10-2, 2-3-1) honored its nine seniors in a pregame ceremony with the contest being the last home game of the season.
The Broncos (8-6-2, 2-3-1) opened the scoring in the first half after creating a turnover and converting it into a goal in the 28
th minute.
GU held Santa Clara scoreless for the remainder of the half and then came out with a strong attack after the intermission. In the 63
rd minute, GU's counter attack worked to perfection with
Quinn Liebmann starting the play with a pass to
Cole Rovegno, who raced up the left sideline. Rovegno lofted a perfect ball into the middle of the box and
Frankie Ljucovic one-timed it into the back of the net to tie the game.
Neither team was able to create a solid opportunity in the first overtime period, but Gonzaga nearly had the game winner in the second overtime. A corner kick off the foot of Rovegno found
Johnny Hansen above the defense, but his header went just wide.
Carter Auth and
Johan Garibay combined in net for Gonzaga with Auth playing the first half and Garibay finishing out the game. Auth had one save and Garibay made two.
