SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's and men's track teams released their 2020 schedules Friday.
The Bulldogs compete in six meets during the indoor season, beginning with the Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open on Jan. 11, before heading outdoor for the Sam Adams Invitational on March 19.
"As always, we use indoors as test efforts to gage where our fitness is," Director of GU Track and Field
Pat Tyson said. "It also breaks up the mundane dark cold winter training days. There's nothing better than entering a 70-degree indoor facility like Dempsey and Kibbie!
"Outdoors is Carnegie Hall. Our goal is to chase NCAA qualifying marks. Last year, we had six men head to regionals, and this year our goal is to send 10 or more to Lawrence, Kan., and hopefully extend their season to early June in Austin, Texas. Let's keep our fingers crossed that we have some decent weather to train to big time personal bests this winter and spring."
The one-day Lauren McCluskey Memorial Open kicks off the season in Moscow, Idaho, before the annual UW Preview in Seattle on Jan. 17-18. The Zags return to Moscow on Jan. 23, for the Idaho Duals, and then back to Seattle on Jan. 31-Feb. 1, for the UW Invitational.
Gonzaga finishes the back-and-forth between Moscow and Seattle with the D1 Invitational Team Challenge on Feb. 7, and the Husky Classic on Feb. 14-15. The NCAA Indoor Championships is March 11-15 in Albuquerque, N.M.
"We're excited about the schedule that we were able to put together for our program," GU women's Head Coach
Jake Stewart said. "Both our indoor and outdoor seasons will provide the athletes plenty of opportunities to be put in perfect competitive environments for themselves, run against the highest level of competition we can and improve along the way. This schedule is important for the growth of our teams."
The outdoor season-opening Sam Adams Invitational returns to Whitworth University. A trip to the Bay Area follows April 2-3, at the San Francisco Distance Carnival and Stanford Invitational. The Northwest Scoring Clash (WAR 13) is at Spokane Falls Community College April 3-4. The Bulldogs stay close with the Pelluer Invitational in Cheney on April 11.
On April 16-17, Gonzaga will send runners to the Mt. SAC Relays and the Bryan Clay Invitational in Walnut Creek, Calif., and Azusa, Calif. The Buc Scoring Invite will feature a select number of Zags at Whitworth April 18.
The Bulldogs will be a part of the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia for the second straight season April 23-25. On May 1-2, GU will split squads between the Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., and the final meet locally of the season, the Spokane Memorial at Spokane Falls Community College.
The Bulldogs are back at Stanford for the Payton Jordan Invitational May 8, and will have runners at the Oxy Invitational in Los Angeles May 9. Gonzaga will chase qualifying times for the final time at the West Coast Invitational in Portland, Ore., on May 16.
The NCAA West Preliminary Round returns to Lawrence, Kan., May 28-30, while the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships is June 10-13 in Austin, Texas.
