NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Gonzaga baseball couldn't get the bats going in a 3-0 loss to CSUN on Saturday afternoon in Northridge, Calif.
Playing immediately after the finish of a restarted game, the Zags (2-4) and Matadors (3-3) battled in a pitcher's duel. CSUN's Wesley Moore allowed just two Zag hits and walked just one in the shutout victory.
"The guys showed great resiliency to get the Game 1 win to start the day," head coach
Mark Machtolf said. "
Alek Jacob gave us a great effort in both games. We have to tip our hat to their starter [Moore], and then get ready to come out tomorrow and win a series."
Gonzaga's two hits came in the final two innings. The first came off the bat of
Jack Krauel, who earlier in the day had sparked GU's heroics extras. He had a single in the eighth inning of this game, but was stranded on first. In the ninth, shortstop
Josh Bristyan doubled with one out, but was stranded as well.
On the mound, GU starter
Alek Jacob continued his day after pitching the final two innings of the finish of the suspended game. Jacob was sharp, allowing just two runs (one earned) on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Michael Spellacy pitched in relief for the Zags, throwing the final 3.0 innings and allowing just one run on three hits.
CSUN's offense came with single runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings on a total of five hits.
Gonzaga and CSUN will play a doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m. The second game will start approximately 30 minutes after the first game finishes. Live stats will be available at GoZags.com.
