Magruder tied for 17th in Arizona
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – After the final day of play at the Loyola Intercollegiate on the Palms Course at the Palm Valley Golf Club, the Gonzaga men's golf team finished tied in eighth place. As a team, the Bulldogs went 18-over (877). GU was even-par (288) in the final round Monday.
Charlie Magruder finished tied for 17th, going one-over (217) after three rounds. He was even-par (72) in Round 3, making six birdies and seven pars. Magruder finished six-under (4.50) on the course's Par-5 holes.
"Charlie had an up and down round, making six birdies and finishing at even for the day," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "A Top-20 finish is a good way to start the spring."
Matthew Ruel tied for 27th, and was three-over (219) in the tournament. In the third round, Ruel carded a 71 (-1) with five birdies.
"Matt also made a bunch of birdies, making five," Gray said. "Just one wedge shot hit a bit too hard that ran through the green into the water, resulting in a double bogey on a Par-5, kept him from shooting in the 60's. Still a good start to his season, as well."
Chris Mogg was even-par (72) in the final round, finishing five-over (221) and tied for 38th. He made two birdies and 14 pars on Day 3. Holden Backes tied for 48th at six-over (222). He was one-over (73) in the third round, making four birdies. Tyler Munetake (T91st, 15-over) was three-over (75) in the final round.
"Chris backed up his solid round yesterday with a steady round of two birdies and two bogeys for even par," Gray said.
After being tied for 10th following the second day, playing as an individual, Brentt Salas withdrew due to illness.
"Unfortunately, Brentt had to pull out due to illness," Gray said. "He had himself in really good position to get his spring off to a great start."
Alabama-Birmingham claimed victory in the event going 18-under (836) in the tournament. After a phenomenal 17-under (271) final round, UAB cruised to the team title. Elon was second at five-under (859).
Loyola's Evan Brown finished at the top of the leaderboard. He was one-over (73) in the final round, but finished eight-under (208) in the event. Two golfers tied for second at seven-under (209).
"We got off to a great start then dropped back through the middle of the round, finally bouncing back towards the end," GU Head Coach Robert Gray said. "Today, along with the entire event, showed the parts of our game that need more reps but also what we're capable of achieving. We were six-under after the first four holes and those aren't the holes we consider the easier ones. That was a great sign of what we can do.
"I'm proud of how the guys fought all week. Despite hitting shots they don't normally hit, they kept their chins up and got a lot out of their rounds."
