Men’s Tennis Strong in Win Over No. 31 BYU

GU won four singles matches to come from behind

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga men's tennis team stunned No. 31 BYU in singles to take a ranked victory on Friday afternoon at the Stevens Center.

The win over BYU was just Gonzaga's second in nine chances, and it came on the strength of outstanding play in the bottom four spots in the singles lineup. After GU dropped the doubles point, it was the bottom of the lineup that dominated the Cougars.

"It was a great win today for our guys," head coach Jonas Piibor said. "It is definitely something to hang our hat on as we continue the process."

Down 1-0, GU's Kyle Everly was masterful in his 6-3, 6-0 win on No. 4 to tie the score, and shortly after, Hunter Egger added another win for the Zags. On No. 6, Egger cruised to a 6-2 win on the first set and then held off his Cougar opponent in a 7-6(4) tiebreak to give Gonzaga 2-1 lead.

BYU tied it at 2-2 and then both Vincent Rettke and Emilio Moreno went to work to finish the match. Rettke won in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 to set up the clincher.

Moreno had already won his first set 6-3, but a second-set loss by an identical score forced the deciding set. In the third, Moreno sprinted out to a 4-1 lead and then traded games to take a 6-3 win and give the Zags the team victory.

Ruadhan O'Sullivan was also leading his match 1-0 in the third set after splitting the first two with his opponent. That match went unfinished.

Gonzaga now has a week off before hitting the road to San Francisco on March 29.
