PROVO, Utah — Gonzaga women's tennis tried to battle back all day at No. 37 BYU, but the Cougars came out on top 4-2 on Friday afternoon in Provo, Utah.
Gonzaga (6-7, 1-1) wasn't able to overcome a loss in the doubles point, but did keep the match close the entire way with BYU (8-5, 2-0).
GU's No. 21 duo of
Sophie Whittle and
Graciela Rosas earned a victory in doubles on No. 1, 6-2, to even it up, but a tiebreak win by the Cougars clinched the point.
After BYU grabbed the doubles point, Gonzaga's Whittle earned a straight set win on No. 1, 6-1, 6-4, to tie the score at 1-1. BYU took the next two singles matches to finish on Nos. 4 and 3 to put themselves in position to clinch the match.
Gonzaga held them off with a win by Rosas on No. 2, 7-6(5), 6-4 to make it 3-2 and
Haruna Tsuruta was in the lead on No. 5 by a set. But, a win by BYU on No. 6 clinched the match for the Cougars.
Gonzaga will play the final match of a six-match road stretch on Sunday at San Diego. That match is schedule to start at 10 a.m.
