Women's Tennis Falls 4-3 at San Diego

Zags drop doubles, split six singles matches

Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Gonzaga women's tennis tried to play catch-up all day and came up just a point short in a 4-3 loss at San Diego on Sunday afternoon.

The Zags (6-8) pushed the 39th-ranked Toreros (11-2) in doubles, but a loss on No. 1 by a 7-5 scoreline clinched the point for San Diego. The match was Gonzaga's sixth in a row away from Spokane.

"It was an extremely tough road stretch for us," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "I'm proud of how hard the team has fought through it all. I felt like the ladies really battled today, and unfortunately San Diego came out on top. We are really looking forward to coming back to the Stevens Center and taking on USF."

The GU duo of Kate Ketels and Haruna Tsuruta evened up the doubles match with a 6-3 win on No. 2, but San Diego went on to clinch the point.

In singles, the scores went back-and-forth, with GU jumping out with the first two courts to finish. The Zags took a 2-1 overall lead when Graciela Rosas won 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 on No. 2 and Sara Komer won 7-5, 7-6(6) on No. 6.

After San Diego won on Nos. 3 and 1 to take the lead back at 3-2, GU's Ketels won in a comeback 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 to tie the score back up.

San Diego then took the win on No. 4 in three sets to clinch the match.

Gonzaga continues its WCC action on March 29 when they return home to take on San Francisco at 1 p.m. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
