Baseball Drops 3-1 Game at Pepperdine

GU held Pepperdine to four runs or less for second straight day

MALIBU, Calif. — Gonzaga baseball suffered its second consecutive two-run loss on the road at Pepperdine, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon in Malibu, Calif.

Despite getting 5.0 innings of one-run relief from right-hander Michael Spellacy, Gonzaga (8-11, 2-3) couldn't come up with the big hit to put pressure on the Pepperdine (12-7, 4-1) pitching. Spellacy allowed just four hits and one run with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings after entering for starter Nick Trogrlic-Iverson in the fourth.

GU managed just five hits by five different players in the game, with Nick Nyquist collecting one hit and scoring the lone run on an RBI single by Guthrie Morrison in the second inning.

"It was not our best effort all around today, and we'll tip our cap as Pepperdine outplayed us in this one," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We are looking forward to the opportunity to dig one out tomorrow."

Pepperdine got on the board first before GU momentarily tied it in the top of the second. But, the Waves scored again in the bottom of the second and never relinquished the lead.

The Zags and Waves will play the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. Links to live coverage are available on GoZags.com.
