Zags and Florida State Meet Again in Regional Semifinals

Gonzaga appears in fifth straight Sweet 16

THE TIP-OFF:
- Gonzaga and Florida State meet for the third time on Thursday in the 2019 NCAA Tournament West Regional semifinals in Anaheim, Calif., at 4:09 p.m. The programs have split the two previous meetings.
- GU is making its 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament Appearance and 22nd overall. The 21 straight berths to the field is the fourth-longest current streak in the nation (Kansas, Duke, Michigan State).
- The Zags are 33-21 all-time in 21 previous NCAA Tournament appearances with 10 trips to the Sweet 16, three trips to the Elite Eight, one Final Four and an appearance in one national championship game.
- Gonzaga is the only program in the country that has appeared in five straight Sweet 16s.
- GU is 30-19 in the NCAA Tournament under head coach Mark Few with a berth in all 20 seasons of Few's head coaching career.
- The Bulldogs received a one-seed for the third time in program history.
- GU has never played an NCAA Tournament game in Anaheim, Calif.
- The Zags are first in the nation in field goal percentage (53.2), scoring margin (23.9), scoring offense (88.6), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.76).
- Gonzaga advanced to the West Regional semifinals with an 83-71 win over ninth-seeded Baylor Saturday. GU's Brandon Clarke scored 36 points.
- GU is one of only two programs to win its opening-round NCAA Tournament game each of the last 11 seasons, Kansas is the other.
 
SERIES NOTES:
- This is the third all-time meeting between Gonzaga and Florida State.
- Last season, the Seminoles ended GU's season with a 75-60 win in the Sweet 16 in Los Angeles. Ninth-seeded Florida State got 18 points from Terance Mann, while Rui Hachimura scored 16 for the Zags. Zach Norvell Jr. added 14 for GU.
- In the first meeting, the eighth-seeded Zags beat ninth-seeded FSU in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, 67-60, in Buffalo, N.Y. GU had an 18-point lead cut to four with 2:21 remaining, before holding off the Seminoles for the win.
- The victory made Mark Few the all-time winningest coach in program history at 291 wins, passing Hank Anderson's 290.
- Four Bulldogs finished in double-digits led by Matt Bouldin's 17 points. Gonzaga shot 50 percent from the field in the win.
- The Zags are 13-10 against Atlantic Coast Conference competition, including 12-10 under Mark Few.
- Gonzaga won its latest meeting with a member from the ACC, beating top-ranked Duke in the Maui Invitational Championship game this season, 89-87.
 
SCOUTING THE SEMINOLES:      
- Fourth-seeded Florida State beat 12th-seeded Murray State in the second round Saturday, 90-62.
- FSU cruised to the win behind 22 points from Mfiondu Kabengele off of the bench. He was 10-of-12 from the field with seven rebounds and three blocks. Terance Mann added 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
- The Seminoles made 50 percent from the field, including 11-of-27 from three-point range. Florida State held the Racers to 32 percent from the field.
- FSU has won eight of its last nine games, with the lone loss coming in the ACC Tournament Championships to top-ranked Duke, 73-63, on March 16.
- Kabengele has not started a game this season, but leads the Seminoles with 13.1 points per game. Mann adds 11.4 points per outing and a team-best 6.4 rebounds a game.

- The Zags began their Final Four run in Salt Lake City in 2017, beating South Dakota State in the first round and Northwestern in the second round. Gonzaga fell to Wichita State in the second round in 2013 in Salt Lake City, after defeating Southern in the first round.
- Last season, [4] GU defeated [13] UNC-Greensboro and [5] Ohio State in Boise, Idaho, advancing to the Sweet 16 where it fell to [11] Florida State.
 
SWEET SIXTEEN ALL OVER AGAIN
- Gonzaga advanced to its fifth straight Sweet 16 with its win over Baylor.
- The Zags are the only program in the country to appear in the last five Sweet 16s.
- GU is the 12th program ever to reach five straight Sweet 16s. Five straight Sweet 16s have only been matched twice in the 35 years of the expanded bracket era, by Kentucky and Kansas. It's only been exceeded three times, with North Carolina and Duke both enjoying nine-year runs and Duke also producing one of eight seasons.
- This is GU's 10th Sweet 16 appearance, with nine coming under Mark Few.
 
RECORD-BREAKING DAY FOR BC:
- Brandon Clarke's 36 points in Gonzaga's second round win over Baylor were the most-ever scored by a Zag in the NCAA Tournament, surpassing Adam Morrison's record of 35.
- His 15 made field goals are also a new program record in the NCAA Tournament.
- Clarke's five blocks against Baylor were the second-most by a Bulldog in the NCAA Tournament.
- Clarke became the third player in NCAA Tournament history to score 35 points and block five shots, joining David Robinson and Shaquille O'Neal.
 
FAMILIAR TERRITORY:
- Josh Perkins has started in all 14 of his NCAA Tournament appearances for the Zags. He has dished out 46 assists and averages 8.2 points in the NCAA Tournament.
- He became only the 11th player in program history to score 100 or more career points in the NCAA Tournament.
- Perkins' 14 appearances in the NCAA Tournament are tied for the most in program history, while his 46 assists are the most in GU history in the tournament. His 15 steals all-time in the tournament are also tied for the most in program history.
- Zach Norvell Jr. averages 15.8 points per game in the tournament, in five appearances, which ranks fourth in program history.
- Killian Tillie has appeared in 10 games in the NCAA Tournament.
