Bulldogs face Cougars on the water third time this season

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga men's rowing team heads to Pullman, Wash., to take Washington State in the 30th annual Fawley Cup Saturday, April 13 at Wawawai Landing on the Snake River. The third varsity eight will open the regatta at 9 a.m., followed by the second varsity eight at 9:15, varsity eight at 9:30 and novice eight at 10 a.m.

"The Cougars are always tough at home," head men's rowing coach Dan Gehn said. "We have had two weeks of good training, and they guys look forward to the challenge."

ABOUT THE REGATTA:
- The Zags and Cougars have raced in the Fawley Cup every year dating back to 1990.
- The Zags' varsity eight is 25-4 all-time in the event. They did not lose a race from 1990 to 2005. The Cougars took two-straight in 2014 and 2015, but the Zags have come out on top the last three seasons.
- Since 2002, the varsity eight is 13-4, the second varsity eight is 15-1, the third varsity eight is 3-2, the varsity four is 4-0, the second varsity four is 3-0, the novice eight is 14-2, the second novice eight is 5-1, and the novice four is 4-0.
- Since 2002, the Zags have won seven of the nine Fawley Cups on the Snake River. Two of the last four varsity eight races in Pullman have been decided by four seconds or less, with GU taking three of four.
- Since 2002, the second varsity eight is 7-1 on the Snake River, winning the last four.
- Since 2002, the novice eight is 9-0 in Pullman.
- The last time the teams lined up varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight, and novice eight boats was in 2018 in Pullman.
- Since 2002, the third varsity eight is 3-0 in Pullman.
- The Zags have swept the regatta 10 times since 2002, including the last three.

EVENT HISTORY:
- Last season on the Snake River in Pullman, GU swept the Fawley Cup for the third consecutive year, taking the varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight and novice eight races.
- The year before, on Silver Lake outside of Spokane, the Zags swept the varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and novice four races.
- The most dominant Gonzaga varsity eight victories came in 2016 and 2007, when the Zags won by 22 seconds and 28 seconds, respectively. The best races in GU victories came in 2010 and 2005, when the Bulldogs won by just over a second both times, with 2010 being in Pullman.
- The varsity eight has won nine of their last 12 races, dropping the two in 2014 and 2015, and a race in 2011.
- The second varsity eight has won the last eight events, and has only lost once, 2010, since 2002, racing every year but 2006.
- The novice eight has won the last three and the last 10 out of 11.
