Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Gonzaga baseball wasn't able to get its bats going in a 4-0 loss at Santa Clara on Thursday night at Stephen Schott Stadium.
Freshman starter
Mason Wells pitched well until late in the eighth inning for Gonzaga (17-16, 10-6). After going the first 7.2 and allowing just one run, the Broncos (7-27, 2-11) got to him with a three-run homer with two outs in the eighth. For the game, Wells went 8.0 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks. It was his second complete game of the year.
Offensively, Gonzaga managed just four hits in the game with
Josh Bristyan leading the way in reaching base three times. He had a single, a walk and was hit by a pitch.
Troy Johnston and
Ryan Sullivan each had doubles in the game.
The Zags put two runners on in the third, fifth and seventh innings, but each time it was with two outs and any rally was halted with the next batter by the Santa Clara pitching staff.
Santa Clara put its first run on the board in the third with an RBI single, and then had the home run in the eighth to round out the scoring.
