SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Gonzaga baseball jumped out to a 6-2 lead after four innings and held on as Santa Clara scored three runs in the ninth on Saturday afternoon in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Zags (19-16, 12-6) scored four runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth to build just enough of a lead to take down the Broncos (8-29, 2-13) and win the series.
"This was a good series win on the road behind a good pitching performance by
Mac Lardner and some timely hitting to grab an early lead," head coach
Mark Machtolf said. "
Nick Trogrlic-Iverson did a great job of coming in to finish the game in a big situation in the ninth. We are looking forward to squaring up with Stanford on Monday."
Lardner went 8.1 innings, allowing just three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and only one walk. After
Michael Spellacy gave up a pair of hits and two GU errors allowed runs to score, Trogrlic-Iverson entered and shut the door for his first-career save.
Eight different Zags had a hit in the game with
Brett Harris and
Ernie Yake collecting two apiece. Harris also hit a solo homer in the game and scored twice.
Mason Marenco notched two RBI on his first-career triple, and both
Nick Nyquist and
Josh Bristyan each knocked home a run.
Gonzaga's four-run second got started with an RBI single by Nyquist, and then Marenco came to the plate with two aboard and knocked them both home with his triple. Bristyan capped the scoring when he brought home Marenco on a groundout.
After Santa Clara put up two runs in the third inning, GU bounced back with two of its own in the fourth. Harris hit a solo shot to lead off the inning and Bristyan again pushed home Marenco when the Santa Clara defense made an error at shortstop.
Gonzaga will be on the road at No. 3 Stanford on Monday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
