Men’s Tennis Beats Portland 4-1 on Senior Day

The win is GU’s first-ever over Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. Gonzaga men's tennis seniors Ruadhan O'Sullivan and Emilio Moreno led their team to the 4-1 win over Portland on Senior Day at the Stevens Center. Gonzaga's victory over the Pilots is the first in program history.

Gonzaga (16-7, 7-2) grabbed the doubles point and then got out to a 3-0 lead in singles before finishing off the match over the Pilots (7-14, 2-7). O'Sullivan and Moreno each had a hand in the victory, collecting singles wins in straight sets. Gonzaga's victory gave them a school-record seven conference wins and assured itself of the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming West Coast Conference Championships.

"First, I want to congratulate our seniors; both Ruadhan [O'Sullivan] and Emilio [Moreno] have played an integral part in the success this year, and we wouldn't be where we are today without them," head coach Jonas Piibor said. "Now we look forward to the WCC Tournament next week."

In doubles, Kyle Everly and Hunter Egger took over on No. 3 on the way to a 6-2 win to set up the point for GU. After Portland won on No. 1, the GU pair of Moreno and Simon Homedes Dualde came back from down 3-4 to win the last three games for a 6-4 victory.

Then in singles, O'Sullivan and Moreno dominated their matches. On No. 2, O'Sullivan was the first to finish with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Moreno came through shortly after with a 6-1, 6-3 victory to make it 3-0.

After Portland won the next point, Gonzaga's Sam Feit battled to a third set and won, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to give GU the win.

Gonzaga will advance to the West Coast Conference Championships in Claremont, Calif., on April 25-27. Seedings and match schedule will be released in the coming days.
