Women’s Tennis Takes 4-3 Win at LMU

Whittle clinched the match with a three-set win at No. 1

LOS ANGELES — Gonzaga women's tennis held off LMU to grab a 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles, Calif.

The Zags (8-9, 3-2) jumped out to a 3-1 lead and then got a win from Sophie Whittle on No. 1 to clinch the match over LMU (7-6, 2-3).

"I was so impressed with our energy today," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "It was the difference in the match. LMU is such a quality team and to get a win on the road is so difficult. I'm really proud of the team today. We are excited for next weekend's matches at home. We hope we can send the seniors out on a high note."

Gonzaga won the doubles point with a pair of dominating wins on Nos. 1 and 3. On No. 3, GU's Dominique Garley and Sara Komer were nearly perfect in a 6-0 win, while Whittle and Graciela Rosas followed shortly after with a 6-1 win.

In singles, Domonique Garley made it 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 win on No. 3, but the Lions got their first win on No. 4 to pull within one.

Rosas then grabbed a singles win on No. 2 with a 7-6, 6-0 win, but LMU battled back with the next two victories to square the match at 3-3 with only No. 1 still playing.

At the top court, Whittle, the nation's No. 9-ranked player, came back after losing the first set to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Gonzaga will be back at home for its next two matches, hosting Pacific and Saint Mary's on Friday and Saturday. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
