SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga baseball got seven shutout innings from starter
Mac Lardner and manufactured just enough offense in a 3-0 win to take the series against Pacific on Sunday in Spokane, Wash.
"To have a pitcher come out and shut them out like Mac did is huge," head coach
Mark Machtolf said. "He did an outstanding job, and we really needed it today. We thought
Alek Jacob was really good this weekend, too."
Lardner allowed just four hits, struck out three and walked just one in a combined shutout with closer
Alek Jacob. Jacob threw the final 2.0 innings to get his seventh save of the season and help Gonzaga improve to 14-14 overall and 7-5 in the West Coast Conference. The loss dropped Pacific to 16-16, 4-8.
"I'm starting to feel good, and it's good to be feeling good," Lardner said. "Sundays are a big game; you're either winning a series or losing a series. I just tried to set the tone early and ride it out. "
The Zags manufactured their offense in a variety of ways on Sunday, getting two runs in the second and one more in the sixth.
Mason Marenco and
Guthrie Morrison had two hits apiece.
In the second inning, Marenco led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Daniel Fredrickson and then scored on a double by
Nick Nyquist for the first run. Nyquist then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jack Machtolf to make it 2-0.
In the sixth, GU added one more on a sacrifice fly by
Austin Pinorini after Morrison started the inning with a double and moved to third on flyout by
Troy Johnston.
Gonzaga will be back on the road for a three-game series at Portland starting on Friday. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
