Iverson Gem, Nyquist Homer Earn 1-0 Win at LMU

Nick Nyquist hit a seventh-inning homer for the game’s only run

LOS ANGELES – Gonzaga starter Nick Trogrlic-Iverson dazzled on the mound and Nick Nyquist hit a solo homer for the only run of the game in a 1-0 Gonzaga win at Loyola Marymount on Friday night in Los Angeles.

Trogrlic-Iverson combined with closer Alek Jacob to help Gonzaga (29-21, 17-8) move into a tie for first in the West Coast Conference, while LMU (28-22, 14-11) is left battling for one of the two remaining spots in the WCC Tournament.

"It was just an all-around well-played baseball game," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We are really happy with Iverson tonight, he really set the tone on a Friday night. Nick Nyquist got the huge hit, and Alek Jacob came in and did his thing. We are ready to get back out there tomorrow."

Trogrlic-Iverson and LMU starter Codie Paiva put up zeroes through the sixth, until Nyquist broke up the shutout with a solo home run to left center in the top half of the seventh inning.

On the night, Trogrlic-Iverson turned in a fantastic performance, going 7.0 shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven and retiring the last 15 batters he faced. Jacob came on and completed the shutout for his 10th save, allowing just two hits and striking out three in 2.0 innings of work.

With a 1-0 lead, Jacob worked around a leadoff double in the eighth inning, getting a strikeout and groundout to end the frame. He got the first two in the ninth, and then closed the game with a strikeout after an LMU single.

GU and LMU will play the second of a three-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Page Stadium in Los Angeles.  Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
