Box Score LOS ANGELES – Gonzaga baseball got a great performance by a quartet of pitchers on the way to a 4-1 win to take the series at Loyola Marymount on Sunday in Los Angeles.
Gonzaga (30-22, 18-9) spot starter
Michael Spellacy pitched well in his 3.1 innings of work to set the tone against the Lions (29-23, 15-12). He kept the Lions scoreless and allowed just three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. He gave way to freshman
Daniel Naughton who got the win with 2.2 innings of work allowing just one run.
Mason Wells got two outs in the seventh and
Alek Jacob cleaned up the final 2.1 for his 11
th save.
Brett Harris went 3-for-5 for the Zags,
Guthrie Morrison added two hits, and
Ernie Yake reached base three times on a hit and two walks to lead the offense.
Gonzaga got on the bats right from the start, getting two in the first inning.
Troy Johnston knocked home the first run with a single, and then Pinorini followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
GU's Spellacy was relieved by Naughton with one on and one out in the fourth, and he was able to strike out the next two batters to get out of the inning and protect the lead.
Naughton was cruising until an LMU solo homer in the sixth brought the score to 2-1. The offense picked him up in the 7
th with two more runs to make it 4-1.
Josh Bristyan brought home the first run on a pinch-hit single, and then Yake put the pressure on with a squeeze bunt to score Bristyan from third after a single by
Jack Krauel had moved him over.
Jacob then came on to close out the game and allowed just one hit over the final 2.1 innings.
Gonzaga advances to the West Coast Conference Tournament and will play on Thursday in the four-team, double-elimination bid for a league title and automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
