SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's soccer team opened the 2019 season with a 2-1 double-overtime exhibition loss to Washington Friday.
In a non-counting contest for both teams, the Zags forced the match to extra time scoring a goal with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, before Washington recorded the game-winner with 10 seconds left in the second overtime.
Both teams possessed the ball for 50 percent of the match, and the Bulldogs held a slim 22-21 edge in shots. Both teams placed 10 shots on goal.
After a scoreless first half, the Huskies' Olivia Van Der Jagt found the back of the net off of a corner kick from Helena Reischling. GU scored the equalizer in the closing seconds off of a corner from
India Jencks to
Sophia Viviano. In the 110
th minute, Washington's Ruby Hellstrom flicked in a pass from Ameera Hussen for the winner.
Vivano and
Samantha Heilman each took a game-high five shots, with Viviano putting four on frame. Hellstrom took five shots as well, having three shots on goal.
Dani Hansen recorded eight saves for the Huskies, while GU's
Isabel Jones made seven saves.
Gonzaga opens its regular season schedule at Texas Thursday. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. Pacific Time. The match will broadcast on the Longhorn Network and will have live stats.
