Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Gonzaga's
Erin Healy scored a game-winning goal in the closing seconds of the first extra period to give the Gonzaga women's soccer team a 2-1 road win at Sam Houston State Sunday.
Healy, a freshman, scored both Zag (1-1-0) goals in only her second collegiate appearance. It's already her second and third goals of the season, after scoring GU's first goal of the 2019 season Thursday.
Gonzaga outshot SHSU, 23-11, in the first-ever meeting between the programs. The Bulldogs placed 12 shots on goal, while Sam Houston State had two. GU also had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bearkats (0-2-0) struck first in the 18
th minute, as Sammi Mayock found the back of the net for SHSU's first goal of the season. Her goal came from the top of the box off of an assist by Kenzie Arrington.
With only nine minutes remaining in regulation,
Payton Stiles played a ball to Healy for the equalizer.
Healy's game-winner came off of a breakaway and was struck from 18 yards out.
India Jencks recorded her second assist of the season. Jencks' 37 career points ranks seventh in program history.
Healy took two shots in the game, and scored both times. The Zags'
Madeline Gotta had a game-high six shots, placing two on frame. GU forced Sam Houston State's Tatum Krueger into 10 saves.
Gonzaga hosts Colorado State Thursday at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs' home-opener will be the second all-time meeting between the programs, after GU shutout the Rams, 2-0, last season in Fort Collins, Colo. Colorado State moved to 2-0 with a 3-2 win over SIU-Edwardsville Sunday.
