Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga men's soccer came back from down a goal to tie the score at 1-1, but Sacramento State had the answer on the way to a 2-1 loss for GU in its home opener on Sunday evening at Luger Field.
Gonzaga (0-2-0) outshot the Hornets (2-0-0) 14-9 and had more shots on goal – 6-4 – but couldn't come up with the equalizer in the final minutes to suffer its second one-goal loss of the young season.
The Hornets got on the board first just over six minutes into the game, but the GU defense buckled down the rest of the half and went into the break down 1-0.
GU controlled possession early in the second half and the offensive pressure created a free kick opportunity for freshman
Cole Rovegno. From 25 yards out, Rovegno hit a left-footed strike to the left side of the net to tie the score at 1-1 in the 56
th minute.
The Hornets answered just 15 minutes later with the go-ahead goal to take a 2-1 lead in the 71st minute.
GU kept its attack going throughout the half, totaling six shots on goal in the second half. Rovegno had another shot on goal and both
Demitrius Kigeya and
Theo O'Malley put the ball on net from inside the 18-yard box in the final 20 minutes.
