LINCOLN, Neb. – In the first-ever meeting between the programs, the Gonzaga women's soccer team won at Nebraska Sunday, 2-1.
The Zags (6-2-0) finished off an impressive two-game sweep on its Midwest road trip, after winning at Kansas State Thursday, 3-2. GU has now won three straight and six of its last seven.
On a hot Sunday at Barbara Hibner Stadium, all three of the game's goals came in a 13-minute span in the first half.
Nebraska (1-4-1) opened the scoring in the 21
st minute. Savanah Uveges found the back of the net for the first time this season on a penalty kick.
In the 29
th minute,
India Jencks took a ball from near midfield and dribbled through the Cornhusker defense, before sliding a shot low past the Nebraska keeper for the Zags' first goal. Jencks' 17
th career goal, was also her 42
nd career point.
Gonzaga's
Sophia Viviano recorded her 12
th career goal and 35
th career point on a shot in the 34
th minute. Her first points of the season came on a rebound off of a saved shot in the box.
Nebraska outshot the Bulldogs, 8-5, but GU had a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams took six corner kicks. Aubrei Corder made two saves in the Cornhusker net, while the Zags'
Isabel Jones made one save.
Gonzaga returns to Luger Field to host Idaho State Friday at 7 p.m. The Bengals (1-6-1) fell to Cal Poly Sunday, 3-1, after beating Saint Mary's, 2-1, Thursday.
