IRVINE, Calif. – Gonzaga men's soccer scored first, but had to make a comeback to tie it in the second half of a double-overtime draw at UC Irvine, 2-2, on Sunday afternoon in Irvine, Calif.
Facing a 2-1 halftime deficit, Gonzaga rallied in the 70
th minute to get the tying goal from
Mark McEntosh and then held on throughout the two 10-minute overtime periods to preserve the draw.
The totals were just as even as the scoreboard as both teams took 13 shots, while UCI (2-4-2) had seven on goal and Gonzaga (1-6-1) had six on goal. Both teams had three corner kicks.
Gonzaga got on the board right away with
Theo O'Malley's second goal of the season. Demetrius Kigeya dropped a pass back to O'Malley, who hit a bending shot from 30 yards out for the 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.
Just before half, UCI got its offense going and scored back-to-back goals in a three-minute span to take a 2-1 lead into the break.
After creating chances early in the second half, Gonzaga broke through with the equalizer from McEntosh. After getting possession back deep in the UCI end, McEntosh turned and fired a shot past the keeper from about 30 yards out to tie the game in the 70th minute.
Gonzaga has three weeks without a match, next hitting the field to start WCC play in Los Angeles at Loyola Marymount on Oct. 12. Check GoZags.com for links to live coverage.
