SPOKANE, Wash. – No. 17 Washington State used an Averie Collins' goal nine seconds into overtime to holdoff the upset-minded Gonzaga women's soccer team, 1-0, Thursday.
 
After 90 scoreless minutes, Collins struck a ball from 22 yards out into the back of the net just into the first extra period. The win kept WSU (4-0-0) unbeaten so far this season. The Cougars entered the game as the No. 1 scoring team in the nation, averaging 5.33 goals per game. Collins unassisted goal was her fourth of the season.
 
Isabel Jones made seven saves in the Gonzaga net, including several that impressed a season-high Luger Field crowd of 1,171. The Zags forced Washington State's Ella Dederick into four saves. The Cougars outshot GU, 24-9. WSU had a slim edge in possession, controlling the ball for 52 percent of the match.
 
Madeline Gotta and Sophia Viviano both took three shots for the Bulldogs (3-2-0), with Viviano placing two on goal.
 
In the first half, the Cougars outshot Gonzaga, 10-2, forcing Jones into three saves. The Zags had two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes. WSU maintained possession for 54 percent of the time in the first half. It was the first time this season that the nation's leading scoring offense was held scoreless in the first half.
