Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Seattle, 4-0

Four Zags score in fourth win of the season

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Gonzaga women's soccer team picked up their fourth win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Seattle University Sunday.

It was the Zags' (4-2-0) third straight win over Seattle, and the all-time series is now even at 5-5. GU is now unbeaten in 20 of its last 23 games at home, and 16-4-2 at Luger Field under Chris Watkins.

Gonzaga maintained possession for 53 percent of the match Sunday. The Bulldogs placed eight shots on goal, and outshot SU 18-12. The Redhawks had two shots on frame, with Jessie Ray taking a team-high five shots, placing one on target. Four of Lauren Elwer's game-high five shots were on goal for GU.

Elwer's fourth goal of the season came in the eighth minute to open the scoring. The freshman dribbled up the sideline, cut through the Seattle (3-2-1) defense and slid a shot past the Redhawk keeper with the outside of her right foot.

In the 37th minute, Samantha Heilman nearly put the Zags ahead 2-0, but her header off of a cross from Maddie Cooley struck the left post.

Gonzaga's Sophia Braun scored her first goal of the season, and second of her career, in the 42nd minute. Madeline Gotta crossed in a ball in the box and Braun struck it into the back of the net. It was Gotta's eighth career assist, and 20th career point.

The Zags possessed the ball for 54 percent of the time in the opening half, outshooting the visiting Redhawks, 9-5. GU put four shots on goal in the first half.

Healy scored her fourth goal of the season in the 63rd minute. Gotta had a shot deflected up in the box and Healy headed into the net over the Seattle keeper.

The Bulldogs' Payton Stiles capped off the scoring in the 85th minute. She curled a shot from distance over the keeper and into the far side of the net. Taylor Kernion was credited with the assist.

The Redhawks' Madison Waguespack made four saves, while Isabel Jones and Lyza Bosselmann each had a save in the GU net.

The Bulldogs travel to Kansas State (1-2-2) Thursday, before facing Nebraska (1-3-1) on the road Sunday. It will be the first meeting with both programs in GU's program history. Thursday's game at Kansas State starts at 5 p.m. Pacific Time. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+, and have live stats on GoZags.com.
